MATADERO, Fringe Festival 4-27 July 2014

Viernes 4

SUIT.CASE  (Shahar Dor Company)

Me encantó

FRIDAY 4th
In his 30 Cecil Street, Dan Canham pays hommage to an abandoned building using fragments of voices and sounds. In this physical theatre performance, Canham evokes memories of long-gone moments in the  life of this building, which has been used as a theatre, an opera house, a cinema, a bingo hall and a disco among other things in the 150 years of its existence.
I was moved by the 25 minute emotive performance. Dan Canham moves beautifully too(the word-play isn't intentional)

SATURDAY 12th
From the Street to the Stage, that's the motto of the Brodas Bros who use break-dance and hip-hop culture as the axis of their shows. ( http://www.brodasbros.com/ )
An international hiphop and urban culture company founded in Barcelona in 200
Loaded with energy, technique humour and imagination, young and old vibrate with them
I hadn't heard of them but went because it fitted in with my itinerary for that night's programme of the Fringe. The two boys danced in the"street" of the Mataderoenclosure. and I loved it. It´s been ages since I've seen one of those wonderful break-dance shows that combine an excellent choice of music with touching choreography. Great break/street-dance, hip-hop and physical contact technique. The two dancers also knew how to connect with the audience.
I've put Brodas Bros on MY LIST

SUIT.CASE  (Shahar Dor Company)
The other choice that night was dense and difficult (and I'm sure very uncomfortable for the performers)
"...is a cry for liberty; a ceremony of surrender, where body and soul are reborn under the suits that society imposes...telling us what to do and what we should be..."
It was like a moving painting in that big, dark industrial nave, buckets suspended from the ceiling dripping white paint,  the actors contorting underneath and afterwards writhing on a very wet floor but all in slow-motion, the dramatic lighting. A flautist moved around the perimetre of the space Aesthetically it was beautiful.
Amazing how much liquid a normal -sized bucket can hold!!  I also couldn't help wondering how long it took to clean up and dry out after that. Do they take their suits to the dry cleaners? And just as well it¨s summer!
Such trite and trivial thoughts!!

THURSDAY 17/7
It was a co-incidence but just the two pieces that I wanted to see that night were in very alternative spaces! For the first performance we had to go down some metal stairs into a basement where Paula Quintana (Latente) was waiting,  in a small store-room and the 22h performance of "Caballitos de Anis" was up on a roof. It was such fun.

LATENTE Press Cutting(Fringe Festival Matadero)
Microdance with a touch of Flamenco
"An individual, a place a time, anyone, everyone  "we just are", only that.. The aim of this piece is to bring Humans closer to Humans. To imagine, project, evoke evading the conditions of time, form, depth, context...Latente deals with the attempt of trying to create, the desire of being".
Admirable to be artistic and to have the need to express one's creativity, the thought- process, the effort and time it takes for it to evolve and gel. To be brave enough to bare one´s self mentally and to begin a performance dressed only in underwear with a jersey that looked like a hangman's hood wrapped around one's head, "zapateando" (that explains, I suppose, the "with touches of flamenco") in a very small space with the audience standing around you close enough to touch, but it sure helps if one is very pretty and has a fantastic figure!!

Caballitos de Anis (Impromptus Investigación Teatrál)
"Caballitos exists because of its 2 characters, they could be 2 actors who have come out of a play, 2 factory workers, or maybe  2 circus artists, 2 individuals..."
And my addition: 2 Pierrots- sad-faced and serious while people laugh.
Caballitos was an ironic piece criticizing the actual political scene. While the two actors/performers acted/performed with the most amazingly synchronized movements never changing their tragic expressions, a voice "on-off" , a minister(ess) was giving a speech in parliament on the housing situation. It was very ironic and people laughed!
And by that time it was dark and we were on a rooftop, a slight breeze was blowing on a hot summer night in Madrid and this song started playing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sru0XUwsBPM while the two actors/performers acted/performed with the most amazingly synchronized movements never changing their tragic expressions.
Beautiful and the song has been running in my head ever since!

MARK MORRIS DANCE GROUP, Teatro Real

... y me gustó mucho.

I wasn't planning on going to see the Mark Morris Dance Group, as I saw them last year and I suspected it would be similar.  Neither is my budget  compatible with the Teatro Reals prices but  I was given a ticket!
The score this year was by Haendel and the dances based on pastoral poems by John Milton.

Here are some quotes from my post of Jan. 2013 of Mozart Dances
...but it was lovely. I loved  the way the dancers, choreographically, interacted with each other, how they supported each other. I loved how they continually entered and left the stage, how the formations  formed and flowed...
...... the music was so wonderful,
.....It was so pretty and gentle and visual and uncomplicated

And that just about sums it up!

Robot Blanca Li Teatros del Canal

¡Espectacular!

What a spectacular production!
I can't imagine what the budget came to!
Blanca Li`s new show, Robot, is about our relationship with machines and our increasing reliance on them. Even though its subject matter is more impersonal when compared with her Corazon Loco, it still had her characteristic signature: extravagant, tender, humour, defiant.
Wonderfully prepared dancers that could handle Li's physically demanding work. They either danced in flesh-coloured underwear or in blue uniforms like the ones worn by the Japanese workers in electrical stores.
A few of the robotic sequences were just a bit too long and verged on the monotonous but contrasted well with some of the super-fast dances parodying the speed and stress of modern-day life.
Amazing musical  robots created by Maywa Denki and Yoshimoto Creative Agency but the heroes of the show were definitely the humanoid Nao Robots ( Aldebaran Robotics) partly thanks to Li's sensitivity and touching choreography.

I was standing on the platform in the subway, waiting for the trainwhen the poster on the other side caught my attention. I noticed the "Hassidic" inspired clothes, then looked again and saw that Ohad Naharin, one of my favourite choreographer's, was on the programme and then I saw that it was C.N.D.  I knew without a doubt that it was going to be good.
Kylian´s Falling Angels and Galili's Sub were very similar choreographically, with  the same hypnotic (or monotonous music, depending on one's point of view) with Galili's dance being a boys-only version of a much more polished girls-only Falling Angels but both being very powerful dances! (I went to enjoy some good dancing and didn't feel like criticising.)
And the Naharin! I said he's one of my favourite choreographer's. Minus 16 was one of the most enjoyable dances I`ve seen in a long time. It was such fun! I'm sure the dancers have a ball doing it! The solo, which starts in the interval with all the lights ontakes the audience a while to realise that the dance has actually started. I loved the mix of music from salsa to traditional Hebrew folk music, loved that super strident electronic version of Hava Nagila (a must at every Jewish function) and here I'm going to explain briefly to the non-members of the Tribe. Seeing the dancers in the typical attire of Hassids - black pants and jacket, the white shirt and the black hat, sitting in a semi-circle dancing to Hebrew folk songs and then slowly chucking off their  clothes, starting with the hats and flinging them across the stage- so irreverent. Loved the tender beautiful pas de deux done to Vivaldi's Nisi Dominus and the unwilling (or willing depending on the person chosen)  "improvised" ball-room dancing, wonderfully choreographied.
I said it was going to be good! It was!

Return, Chevy Muraday, Matadero

Lovely, the latest work by Chevi Muraday
The theme is about the relationships between couples.
Dance theatre, Contact or Physical theatre - whatever its category, it was visually beautiful. The perfectly synchronised lighting effects, the decor and particularly the wardrobe, where each scene and mood had its corresponding colour
Chevi Muraday (dancer, choreographer, director of the piece) dances and Marta Etura (actress)  recites the texts and also dances. She is a lovely dancer,  by the way.

Classical Russian Ballet. Teatro Nuevo Apolo

I'm in charge of organising the modern/  jazz/ modernjazz/ contemporany/ hiphop/ break/ performance /physical theatre even circus (the NON animal kind) outings but ballet and flamenco are not my department. All the same, if anyone offers and organises I'm only too happy to go. So, when I was offered a ticket for the Classical Russian Ballet, to see one of the most classical ballets of all: Swan Lake, of course I accepted. I thought I would find it a bit long, a bit boring, a bit corny but I loved it! The dancers were very polished, the wardrobe, if not lavish, was very pretty and the backdrops verging on kitsch were perfect. even though the stage of the Nuevo Apolo Theatre is a bit small for such a large cast.

The boys weren't very good. and I have finally understood what the word "lacklustre" means. And, they still have "boys feet" (the dancers who read this will know what I mean) I thought that wasn't done anymore what with new teaching techniques and all that. Whatever!...
...but the girls, from the newest in the very back of the very last line (I don´t know if that hierarchy is still being maintained) to the principal dancer (she had that extra something that makes the soloist the soloist) were beautiful dancers.

There were many moments that brought tears to my eyes. What more can one ask for!

The Music-Sublime!
The Choreography-Mundane!
Congratulations to The Ballet Masters and The Cast for their well-polished performance but "mirror-image"choreography and line formations, however intricate, are not very interesting. Of course, there were some lovely moments,  I should hope so, the show lasted over 2 hours but overall it was rather tedious.
I often just closed my eyes and listened to marvellous Mozart. (The Great Mass.) The seats  in the Teatros del Canal are so comfortable and the architect(s) so thoughtfully included  a foot-rest.
The Orchestra, Choir and Soloists were fantastic.

Mozart Dances, Mark Morris Dance Group, El Teatro Real

¡Me encanta Mozart!
I love Mozart!  To listen to Mozart played by a live orchestra is a treat.  And to watch dancing accompanied by a live orchestra is a luxury!  Mozart Dances is Mark Morris's interpretation of Mozart's music into movement. A note, a step!  The orchesta was the resident orchestra  of El Teatro Real accompanied by the pianists  (married to each other, BTW) Emanuel Ax and Yoko Nozaki.
I'm not being critical but I generally find American Dance much less sophisticated than its European counterpart. I went to see Mark Morris Dance Group hoping it wasn't going to be too Seven Brides for Seven Brother-ish. I first saw the company more than twenty years ago, when Morris was quite the enfant terrible. I thought it wonderful then but my tastes were also less sophisticated more than twenty years ago.

So this time I went with misgivings but it was lovely. I loved  the way the dancers, choreographically, interacted with each other, how they supported each other. I loved how they continually entered and left the stage, how the formations  formed and flowed. I usually dislike a circle as a resource but the things Morris did with his was superb (the dance Double, Sonata para dos pianos en Re mayor, K,448). Yes, there were a few boring moments, especially the beginning of each dance but it didn't matter, the music was so wonderful,

It was so pretty and gentle and visual and uncomplicated. It was a Ladies and Gentlemen , Sit back , Relax and Enjoy the show!

As usual, when I see the programme for the Madrid en Danza Festival, I happily make a list of the companies I want to see. This year because of time (and budget) I saw 2 of the 4 that were on my list.
I´m not going to criticise the (every year they seem to get younger) dancers - beautiful, polished, dedicated. There were some wonderful sequencesbut oh, it was all so tedious!! The same movements, the  same gestures, the same "no-music"why all this whispering and panting, the sounds of crunching glass, scratched records, screeching violins - borrrrrrrringStringing words together doesn't necessarily make poetry!  Even though didn't feel like deciphering the story-line there was so much angst and sometimes it was so aggressive  it almost bordered on abuse which is not politically correct these days.
I didn't go see Peeping Tom, a physical theatre companynor Sharon Fridman, an Israeli born, Madrid-based choreographer whose work I think is wonderful. I sure made the wrong choices!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vITS3gVA8oI

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bsydrJNaLsU

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qhcohZ3xLpI

For me, the acronym C.N.D. stood for Compania Nacional de Duato, so I was very interested to see how they are doing under the new director Jose Carlos Martinez. Good News C.N.D. fans! They are as wonderful as ever with the technical perfection and exquisite aesthetics that are their trademark. The programme  called "A Night with Kylian"  consisted of three pieces:  Sleepless (2004), Petite Mort (1991) and Symphony of Psalms  (1978) and it was also interesting to see the evolution of Kylian as a choreographer. But it is too hot today to even dance,  so  I´m going to use a bit of poetic licence and change the metonymic adage "The pen is mightier than the sword" into "Youtube is mightier than the pen." Enjoy these few minutes!

El Arte de la Danza (the Art of Dance) is an ambitious project where Victor Ullate and Eduardo Lao try to span the history of dance from Ballet (using classical music and opera) through to Jazz/Contemporary dance without omitting tap, flamenco and Broadway. We even had a very balletic "Gilda" who took off not one but both gloves. El Arte de la Danza is a tribute to the figure of "The Dancer."
Ullate´s dancers are wonderfully trained and very polished. Their classical work has lovely lines but contemporary dance should be more than heavy breathing with no music. Nor is jazz a few shoulder isolations and distorted hips.
After a good beginning the 90-minute show became an endless round of duets and solos, some of which I found beautiful (see the photo), others rather less so. The Company only danced together in the last number, which apparently represented "The Dancer" finally being accepted into a dance company.

On Friday (30th December) at about 4 o´clock the phone rang and it was a friend(female). "I´ve got a proposition " she said, "Do you want to come with me to see Crazy Horse ? " It wasn´t even on the "I wouldn´t mind seeing" list! But cabaret at 8 o´clock in a theatre, well, why not!

The decor was great: the stage (not on a raised platform but the flush with the front row kind) had been converted into a"cabaret"with a red carpet, lots of little round tables, chairs and waiters/ushers serving (for an extra fee) champagne. My friend(female) and I were unromantically seated in the 15th row.

Crazy Horse Paris is advertised as 60 years of Naked Couture and the girls were gorgeous, only dressed in coloured wigs and the so famous Crazy Horse lighting effects of spots (leopard), dots (polka), wiggly lines, stars and stripes but more than erotic, it was aseptic. The music was too loud, the stage was too dark and it was sooooo boring. I didn´t walk out with a new year resolution of taking up pole dancing!

Utopia would be the perfect show-piece to demonstrate that flamenco has moved on from polka dots and castanets (there weren´t any, by the way. There was a cellist and a drummer).

It was a very "showy" show that was inspired by Maria Pages´s admiration for the Brazilian architect, Oscar Niemeyer (the three white tubes used as props are a clear reference to his work) and was based on poems by Benedetti, Baudelaire, Neruda to name some.

Utopia was very visual from the three tubes, the lighting, the costumes to the flashy fan number.

It´s been ages since musicians have risen from the orchestra pit onto the stage, but the way Pages incorporated them into the choreography was wonderful as were her group pieces. The solos were a bit tedious but with her beautiful arms and those lavish dresses (designed by Pages herself), well, she tricked my senses.

¡MARAVILLOSO! ¡ME ENCANTÓ! ¡IDEAL!

It´s much easier to write about something you don´t like and then there´s the challenge of saying concisely and nicely ( short and sweet) your reasons for it. But when you like something what can you say: It was perfect! Loved it! Wonderful! Etc. Etc.

And what can I say about Poppea//Poppea ? It´s what I always hope for whenever I go see dance! IT WAS PERFECT! LOVED IT! WONDERFUL! Etc.! Etc!
