Surreal (*) : [...]que intenta so

Definitions according to the Oxford Dictionary:
Invasion: an act that affects sb/sth in a way that is not welcome
Intervene: to become involved in a situation in order to improve or help it
Surreal: images or events that are not connected are put together in a strange or impossible way, like a dream
To Dance :a series of steps and movements that are usually performed to music
Technique: a particular way of doing sth, especially one in which you have learnt special skills

When "Eter" started his "Invasions" in Mails de Danza I thought and still do think it such a good idea. Dance, if it´s not a performance by one of the SuperStars or a BlockBusters, is still the Ugly Duckling; although today´s incursion in the park was more Intervention than Invasion.
It was surreal. The girls, some of them technically trained dancers while others just dance, (it´s only a comment though, they are all great) moved slowly, silently and seriously through the park, dancing around the trees, on top of the benches. And sitting on one of the benches, was my husband who had sat there
before, not knowing that " his" bench was part of the décor. He didn´t move and the girls moved around him. He was the unknown element, someone sitting on of "our benches" --to improvise around. Luckily, he was wearing an olive green jacket. It looked like he was part of the show. The girls were thoughtfully dressed in dance-in-the- park-camouflage colours. The only accompaniment was the rustle of the wind in the leaves. One by one they left the main group and ran to a little plaza where, to classical music, they finished the piece. There was a second part, twirling along the paths between Sunday morning park-goers, children, dogs and no-one seemed very surprised by the invasion.
What a pity though that there was such poor attendance by Madrid dancers. Please, a bit more solidarity. There was an appeal put out!

Oh luxury!! The Festival de Otoño´s programme came with the newspaper today -a big fold-out. It´s not always so easy to lay one´s hands on a copy well before the festival starts. I know there´s always internet but I like to have it on paper, all laid out-company, day, place and time. And then with coloured pens mark: what I just have to see, what I would like to see, what I wouldn´t mind seeing and what I´d go see if you insist.
This year the only thing that sounds good is Circo Klezmar (catergory-contemporary circus). But the problem is, it´s only showing in towns out of Madrid, one Saturday per town. I´ll just have to beg, bargain, or bribe my son to get me there. I can always threaten to hide the car keys if he doesn´t take me to Getafe the 14th of november.
The rest is safe and sure and so boring! La Gran Dame, Pina Bausch is back (again!) with a piece from 1978 that was reformed in 2004. Then there´s the other consecrated lady Anne Theresa de Keersmaeker who "caused upheavels in the dance world "......yeah, in 1983!! There´s always Les Ballets C. de la B., love them but it´s a case of "been there, seen it, and done it before." Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui returns, this time doing contemporary-flamenco with Maria Pages!
Maybe I´ll take a look at the music /theatre/dance-theatre offerings. You never know. Wait for the first installment of my new blog -reflexionesteatro.blogspot.com!

Little Street Pieces,Dani Panullo Dance Co.,Plaza de Colon

Little Street Pieces is Dani Panullo´s latest show.It is a recopilation of some of his favourite pieces taken from previous works. Its a show to be danced in urban spaces, inspired by urban life. Maybe that is why it feels somewhat cold, it lacks complicity and contact between the dancers.

His outstanding dancers come from all kinds of disciplines —break, contemporary, gimnastics, butoh etc., and when Panullo manages to combine these terchniques his "little pieces" are excellent.
But for me, its as boring to watch a b-boy balancing on his elbow as it to see the poor little Chinese contortionist from the circus, not to mention the typical break semi-circle where each dancer goes into the middle to do his/her "thing". (But its all a matter of taste: my 13 year old son and his
mates only liked the break.)

One of the pieces that really worked well was the one alternating b-boy with hip-hop girl, while they jerked and "froze" and twirled and turned, one after the other. And why does classical music and break combine so well? Maybe its the ultimate in fusion, and maybe thats why the trio (2 b-boys and 1h-h girl) was so good.

Even so, it was a very pleasant three quarters of an hour, sitting on the ground, a hot evening in July, in La Plaza de Colon.

¡¡flamencomic!!

The malucos Dance Company pays homage to Gloria Fuertes (Madrid 1917-1996), the children´s poet for adults.

Its difficult to put a label to Nanas para despertar(Lullabies to Wake Up to).Danced to Gloria Fuertes´s poems, it appears to be a sophisticated show for children but cigarettes and alcohol are not politically correct these days.So maybe it´s cabaret for their parents, but for this,,it is too innocent and unambiguous. The girls are saucy, not sordid. They are fantastic flamenco dancers;their control of contemporary is outstanding. They can sing and they can act. "The mother" is awesome, physically petite with an outsize voice and personality. There is also an excellent group of musicians and "cantaora "who are always on stage -its flamencontemperformance !!

The last piece with the active participation of the musicians is one of hope and praise for the mother earth. It`s message is moving (and politically correct).

El Dragon y la Rata is dark, difficult and introspective. The synopsis explains that it is about two men who are fleeing from wa
r, trying to escape their destiny. The soundtrack of mainly pianopieces gives it a feel of the silent movies. The props that are used - gigantic metallic tubes, monsters painted on canvasses, the lighting, the prop movers who are dressed in 'fatigues` and anti-gas masks - make it seem like pages out of comics, such as Moebius and with the aesthetics of Metal Hurlant comics - its flamencomic !

"A, El Musical" de Nacho Cano Teatro Haagen Dazs

The challenge I faced was how to write a "short and sweet" review about something I found to be the complete opposite. "A, El Musical" was many things to many people, as such and for the purposes of this review I will confine myself to just the dancing. And what dancing, there was a fascinating mix of hip hop (of course), jazz, African and flamenco dance. The performances were carried off with such earnestness that the audience was left swooning. The dancers, whatever one had to say about the show, were having the time of their lives. Sure many of the moves were straight out of the ´80s classics such as "Flashdance" and the costumes came directly from the set of "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome" but a good time was had by all (by almost all). N.P.

These days, all has been said and done and the newest dance form is already 30/40 years old. What´s in fashion is fusion. And that`s what Hermanos de Baile is-fusion. Two guys hiphop, two tap and the choreographer also does the flamenco. The percusion is provided by a "cajon" player. Sometimes they dance by style, insisting that theirs is the coolest and the hardest, sometimes they all dance together. Its a show for youngsters danced by youngsters-there are duels and duets, they joke with each other and with the public. They are all great dancers but 4 me the hiphoppers were awesome. It´s worth going 2 c (if u r under 25).

The Grupo de Rua was formed in 1996 by Bruno Beltrao y Rodrigo Bernardi with young hiphop dancers. In 2000 Beltrao enrols in the Dance Faculty of the University of Rio de Janeiro where he comes into contact with new concepts that make him restructure his ideas on hiphop and streetdance.

Aunque a

"Intellectual hiphop" is not what one expects to see but there´s a first time for everything. The show started off with a projection on the back wall HipHop Loves the Beat of Music and for a few minutes three of the dancers showed off their best break-moves.Then,the word "music" switched off, and so it did, and for a long time, one of the dancers moved in silent, slow motion. Another dancer then took his place and to the occasional "bong " he did what looked like a tai-chi warm-up. After what seemed an eternity he was replaced by a third boy who moved, a bit faster, to a monotonous hum, broken every now and then by a "ping". By this time the word "beat" had gone. Progressively,as the words switched off, the boys started coming in, in twos, threes and sometimes quartets dancing faster and faster, while more elements were added to the soundtrack. And finally, for the last five minutes or so, they flowed on and off the stage, running backwards (which they did really well), dancing sideways, "chassée-ing" forward "a la capoeira". It was hipnotic, poetic and the music was fantastic, even though at times it looked like the exercise yard at the penitentiary.
Bruno Beltrao has deconstructed (a concept that is so in fashion these days) hiphop. He has broken it down to its basics and has done a very thorough analisis of its vocabulary. As a doctoral thesis I would give him Honours with Distinction but as a spectator, in a theatre, wanting to be entertained, it was heavy-going sitting through almost forty of the fifty minutes in silence or almost. Their sand-shoes squeaking on the stage did add extra sounds. Overall it was tedious and pretentious.
