Si je t´M ,Black Blanc Beur , Instituto Frances

Who says girls can´t dance /do break ? The girls from Black Blanc Beur sure can. I first saw the French group B3, with three male dancers, about five or six years ago, and thought it was the best hiphop-break I had ever seen. I´ve been talking about them ever since. They finally came back to Madrid, this time four girls and four boys, and it was the best hiphop-break I´ve ever seen.
For almost an hour and a half, with sense of humour and playfulness ,the girls flirted with the boys and the boys were bowled over by the girls. They all showed off doing their best break moves. They played ¨footsie-footsie¨,upside down most of the time, while doing impossible out-of-joint hand-and headstands. With tongue-in-cheek they hiphopped to the music of The Sugar Plum Fairy and they did break and waltzed to The Waltz of the Flowers .They danced to Saint-Saens and there were tender pas-de -deux´s done to Chopin, and with Kronos Quartet they gave us a hot jazz number that was so cool. The ¨arpeggio ¨piece was such fun- 8 counts and in came the boys-FREEZE;another arpeggio in another key and in came the girls-FREEZE.It was done just enough times to enjoy and not to bore.
The atmosphere they created with the lighting impressed me the first time I saw them and did again this time.
What a pity they only do ¨one-night-stands¨
P.S. black for black ,blanc for white and beur for arab in the street jargon used in the Parisian suburbs by the French born youths of immigrant parents of North African origin.

The Vivancos Hermanos is a flashy showpiece that highlights the virtuosity of the 7 brothers -each one more goodlooking than the next. They can dance flamenco-ballet, flamenco-hiphop, flamenco-acrobatics and flamenco-flamenco. Not only can they do all of this, they also provide the live backing, each one playing a different musical instrument. All of them had excellent footwork but the ballet trained dancers were by far the best. The others had weak upper bodies and their performances verged on the amateur. I also found the solos a bit too long. A special mention goes to singer Angélica Leyva -what a beautiful husky voice! Her dancing came from the soul.
As a commercial show it worked. It got a standing ovation from the audience . But, if they want to perform in more alternative venues I´d change the choreographer and get rid of the smoke and the disco lights. (I thought that the spotlights must focus on the dancers, not on the audience.)
But the next time my friends (girls) give me a hen- night, please, I want the Vivancos Brothers doing the blue- jeans number - what a selection of 6-packs!!!!!

Decorado: sillas, tirar harina, arena o agua.

Fridman no necesita ninguna receta. (D.M.)

Recipe: How to mount a contemporary dance

Ingredients
:

Steps-running around in circles making as much noise as possible /energetic walking /jerky movements/flinging yourself about on the floor/ you pick me up, I pick you up and we all fall down again and again

Music
-varied from classical to rock ,interspersed with sounds of: the sea/wind in the trees/insects /heavy panting/monologues

Costumes-unattractive clothes/no-nonsense underwear/undressing on stage/ nudity

Decor -chairs/ liberal use of flour-sand-water

Method: Mix at will. Do NOT smile or show any any expression that denotes joy or pleasure

The XXI Contemporanean Dance Competition had all the right ingredients and they were all very well mixed. There are some fantastic dancers here in Spain doing very interesting things but they take themselves too seriously; even when the piece is in a humouristic vein. As it was a competition ,I couldn´t help giving marks. I gave them all, except one, from highly commended to honours. After all they were the 8 finalists in a very prestigious competition.

But, the Honours with Distinction went to Sharon Fridman with his piece "Carlos & Me". He didn`t need to use the recipe. There was pure emotion and joy in Carlos Fernandez and his dancing. The lighting was perfect, the costumes were perfect, the music was beautiful and they didn`t need anything else. I didn`t want it to end. He carried away quite a few of the varied and generous prizes. He got the Audience Award . He also shared the Jury`s 2nd prize with Angel Martinez and Vito Giotta with "IN2" and Janet Novas with "se va del aire " both excellent works. But the ways of the jury are mysterious and the only piece I didn`t like got the 1st prize. Either I am not an initiate in the contemporary dance scene or I simply didn`t get the message but the couple (Company Pisando Ovos) spent most of what seemed an eternity, jumping very high up and down on the spot - what stamina and resistance............

Blanca Li- Corazon Loco

Corazón Loco is a contemporary dance piece that misses all of the pit-falls of modern dance : self-conscious, jittery movements. hyperstylized choreography, and the throw- it -all together zeitgeist that seems much ado about nothing. Instead choreographer, Blanca Li offers us a big hearted, at times silly, damn sexy and gorgeous look at love. Corazon Loco is not your average dance piece, it is raucous dance opera , replete with an original score, dancing singers, and singing dancers. She nails an unabashed sensuality that I seldom, if ever, see in any form of contemporary art. Corazon Loco celebrates desire and isn´t afraid to examine with a clear-eyed tenderness our vulnerabilities. There were certain sections which were too long but for such vivid intensity this isn´t a criticism, merely an observation. (N.P.)

Corazon Loco - Blanca Li (danza) Ensemble Sequenza 9..3 (grupo vocal) Teatro Albéniz

Geeee, that was original, daring, fun!!!! it made me change my lament of late which is- "ho hum, been there, seen it, done it before." It was about LOVE, the birds and the bees, of breaking up and making up and making out.
The dancers sang and the singers danced, at the beginning it was hard to tell who was who. It was a union of bodies and voices, an interaction between light, sound and movement. It was opera-dance. Blanca Li can permit herself the luxury of doing whatever she pulls out of her hat.
And what was that fantastic, elastic science-fiction material used for the back-drop that reflected, silhouetted, that encompassed, and sustained? - what imagination! I was exhausted after that hour and a half fling. (D.M.)

I went tempted by an offer of hip-hop. Dancers( with classical/contemporary training) tend to turn break dancers basic "top-rock" movements into pas de bourrees. A few minutes of this, done to Eminem, is not dancing hip hop.The choreographer isnt what one could call a music-fan either.
Even so, the 4 cast members, the 3 younger dancers and "the guardian of dance who was 1000 years old" were very attractive, professional and all had great stage presence. The idea was interesting, but it just never got beyond being a rough copy. (D.M.)

As a faithful Ramón Oller fan, he still hasn´t let me down, even though the beginning verged on the drama society´s end of year concert. Credit your public with more general knowledge. The religious and patriotic symbols and baby silhouette were unnecessary.
I love his choreography from the dancing to his use of the set decoration, the costumes and the way he blends them all. His sense of aesthetics is very sensitive, and the japanese theme and butoh elements only helped. His dancers are excellent and he knows how to use them to their limits. (D.M.)
