"A, El Musical" de Nacho Cano Teatro Haagen Dazs

The challenge I faced was how to write a "short and sweet" review about something I found to be the complete opposite. "A, El Musical" was many things to many people, as such and for the purposes of this review I will confine myself to just the dancing. And what dancing, there was a fascinating mix of hip hop (of course), jazz, African and flamenco dance. The performances were carried off with such earnestness that the audience was left swooning. The dancers, whatever one had to say about the show, were having the time of their lives. Sure many of the moves were straight out of the ´80s classics such as "Flashdance" and the costumes came directly from the set of "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome" but a good time was had by all (by almost all). N.P.

These days, all has been said and done and the newest dance form is already 30/40 years old. What´s in fashion is fusion. And that`s what Hermanos de Baile is-fusion. Two guys hiphop, two tap and the choreographer also does the flamenco. The percusion is provided by a "cajon" player. Sometimes they dance by style, insisting that theirs is the coolest and the hardest, sometimes they all dance together. Its a show for youngsters danced by youngsters-there are duels and duets, they joke with each other and with the public. They are all great dancers but 4 me the hiphoppers were awesome. It´s worth going 2 c (if u r under 25).

The Grupo de Rua was formed in 1996 by Bruno Beltrao y Rodrigo Bernardi with young hiphop dancers. In 2000 Beltrao enrols in the Dance Faculty of the University of Rio de Janeiro where he comes into contact with new concepts that make him restructure his ideas on hiphop and streetdance.

Aunque a

"Intellectual hiphop" is not what one expects to see but there´s a first time for everything. The show started off with a projection on the back wall HipHop Loves the Beat of Music and for a few minutes three of the dancers showed off their best break-moves.Then,the word "music" switched off, and so it did, and for a long time, one of the dancers moved in silent, slow motion. Another dancer then took his place and to the occasional "bong " he did what looked like a tai-chi warm-up. After what seemed an eternity he was replaced by a third boy who moved, a bit faster, to a monotonous hum, broken every now and then by a "ping". By this time the word "beat" had gone. Progressively,as the words switched off, the boys started coming in, in twos, threes and sometimes quartets dancing faster and faster, while more elements were added to the soundtrack. And finally, for the last five minutes or so, they flowed on and off the stage, running backwards (which they did really well), dancing sideways, "chassée-ing" forward "a la capoeira". It was hipnotic, poetic and the music was fantastic, even though at times it looked like the exercise yard at the penitentiary.
Bruno Beltrao has deconstructed (a concept that is so in fashion these days) hiphop. He has broken it down to its basics and has done a very thorough analisis of its vocabulary. As a doctoral thesis I would give him Honours with Distinction but as a spectator, in a theatre, wanting to be entertained, it was heavy-going sitting through almost forty of the fifty minutes in silence or almost. Their sand-shoes squeaking on the stage did add extra sounds. Overall it was tedious and pretentious.

Uprising/In your rooms, Hofesh Shechter Company, Teatro Albéniz

Colabora con "The Place".

En "In your rooms" usaron música en vivo.

Just when I was saying that its all been said and done in dance and that we´ll need a few decades before new things happen, it´s happened! Hofesh Shechter has taken from all disciplines and formed an exciting super new dance vocabulary. The dancers, in socks, with incredible energy, totally integrated with Shechter´s style danced in slow-motion, fast-motion, liquid- motion, jerky- motion, no-motion . They were sublime, they were primitive. Dramatic lighting, complicated choreographies but very synchronised and live music. The musicians, in the piece "In your rooms" were on scaffolding hung from the roof on the stage - it added to the intensity of the atmosphere.
The H.S. Fan Club has a new member!!!

Classical Ballet is so démodé: its storylines so melodramatic; its characters so stereotyped. "Felicitas, love, hate, mystery" doesn’t flout the conventions. It mixes reality and legend and tells the story of a rich, young widow who was killed by a spurned lover during Carnival in Buenos Aires at the end of the 19th century. Her parents erect a church in her memory. Now, love-sick women, believing her spirit guards the atrium, tie handkerchiefs to the railings, where they are found wet from her tears. But it’s refreshing to see that new work is still being created.

It is a super-production, very polished and professional. The "corps de ballet" are young and enthusiastic. The girls´ knees bang their ears with every "développé", the boys have wonderful elevation and the soloists are excellent.

The "Drummers from Rio de Plata" provided the live music for the carnival scenes. It was a great touch!

Ballet is a bit boring, it`s true. But it is so pretty to watch!

Su sitio web es magnífico www.jant-bi-acogny.com They have a great web site

Germaine Acogny, African born but European trained,(she´s worked with Maurice Bejart and Peter Gabriel, the musician), formed the Jant-Bi Company in 1998. The principal aim is to train dancers from all over Africa in traditional African dances and in European contemporary dance techniques.

According to the programme,Waxtaan is a critical look at African leaders, but for the Spanish people I spoke to afterwards, and for myself, the miming and gestures of musicians and dancers weren´t clear. There wasn´t much "contemporary" work but what there was, was correct... well, technically correct. I would have liked to have seen more defined personalities in the comical pieces, although I don't think it was necessary in the traditional numbers. There was good use of the "African-style" chairs that were always on stage, sometimes to sit on, sometimes as purely decorative items and sometimes as elements in some of the dances. Dancing in European suits and ties, even in the traditional dances, was a nice touch. And the eight boys sure could dance. Accompanied by the percussionists of L'Ecole de Sable, I felt like being up there on the stage with them - only I have the wrong skin-colour and am the wrong gender.

And the best of the night were the three "espontaneos" who jumped onto the stage at different moments of the last piece when each dancer was doing his solo. Later on, I learnt that one of them is an "African dance" teacher and that they were promoting a show they are going to put on. (In Clamores, by the way, the 7 and 11 May)
