I have been to and participated in endless dancing studios end-of-year shows and when it´s a niece, daughter of a friend or one´s own pupils that are dancing, one tends to watch fondly and forgivingly.
But, when it´s the Ballet Nacional de Uruguay that one goes and sees, one is much more judgemental and less lenient. It would be a privilege to have pupils as enthusiastic as the young dancers of the B.N. de U. but I would change choreographers, costume and light designers, the music...
Nacho Duato with Arcangel was exquisite, as usual. Every detail: the costumes, stage-sets, music (Corelli and Scarlatti) was impeccable. Apart from a brief quartet and a glimpse of a trio, there was a succession of perfect couples, one after the other. The ending with the long curtain and the" ascension" was sublime but it got a bit tedious. A long half hour!
Orbitas y Derivas by Angels Magerit was, at least in the beginning, very energetic and dynamic and contrasted well with the elegance of the Duato piece. It had a great variety of lifts (and throws) but it had no cohesion and was more a potpourriof dances put together with the leitmotif being the projected videos. In one of the sequences the special effects were so special that I didn´t even watch the dancers (who were in the dark anyway), I was too fascinated by the swirling mass of colours that were almost tangible!. It got a bit tedious. A long half hour!
Alexander Ekman´sFlockwork made the night! (flock-collective noun for a group of animals). This quote describes it perfectly: "His work is known for its clever ideas, fast- paced choreography and abundance of humour." Wonderful things can be done with three long tables covered with tablecloths, danced to the wonderful music of Matmos (and traditional hawaiian ) by the wonderful dancers of the C.N.D. It was a short half hour!
Y cito a Fridman otra vez
...una mano firme se abre
Llegó allí para sujetar la caída...
NOTAS: 1. (No digo ego y alter-ego a propósito) 3.
A man walks on a wall On one side outer space on the other the silence of being...
these few lines from the poem by Sharon Fridman might explain Al menos dos caras (At least two faces). A man literally walked on a wall.
...A wall is there to support the man Walking on the silence allowing the start of the fall...
Al menos dos caras is a dream and like in dreaming everything is possible, gravity doesn´t exist, one falls but never hits bottom. For me it was like being in that dream and I didn´t want to wake-up. The scenes, thanks to the moving room stage-set changed, dream- like, sometimes in slow motion, others in real-time.
Dos caras is intimate, composed of small cameos. It is autobiographical. It is about love and mutual trust and helping hands that protect you while you sleep (or fall.) And to quote Fridman again
...a steady hand opens and is there to vouchsafe the fall...
Foot notes 1: There are things that mothers shouldn´t know about their children and seeing the balancing tricks that Arthur Bernard Bazin does on top of the fragile moveable wall is one of them
2: Was it a coincidence that the dramatist Antonio Ramirez -Stabivo is physically very similar to Fridaman. The two dark haired men and the blond Bazin helped create an unreal atmosphere, mirror images, beings and alter-beings. (I do not mean ego-alter-ego)
Political Mother is about tinpot dictators, gesticulating, shouting meaningless words. It's about the downtrodden, mindless mass, aimless people who have lost all hope.
Chiaroscuro: more dark than light, oppressive lighting, flashes like photos.
Live music composed by Shechter: very loud rock played by musicians on a three -tiered platform at the back of the stage.
Marvellous choreography! At times it was so visually beautiful it hurt!
I have never seen the Royal Ballet of Sweden and only went because I saw that they were doing something by Mats Ek. And what a surprise - the Ballet, Ek´s choreography was excellent of course! It’s now on the list of "My Favourite Dances"!Rattika (raddish in Swedish) is a choreographic interpretation of Brahms's music; there were no people, no plot. The dancers seemed to be fluffy animals or birds. I loved the way they moved in a pack or a flock and the way the formations formed and disintegrated. There were tender duos and trios and quartets, and sometimes they even seemed to be like plants moving in the wind. The effect of an imaginary wonderland was helped by the lovely clothes and the colour scheme was very carefully thought out. Danced on the big, empty black stage, the effect was magical! The other piece, "Tableau Perdue" by Christian Spuck with music by Mendelsohn, was also excellent. And to quote: ”... I tried to create an illusion of classical ballet using tutus and pointe shoes as a reference. Even though sometimes the 'pure lines' of the 18th century collapse...”. They were all dressed in black but with a variety of designs that went from tutus (I loved the long sleeves) to more modern outfits with pants and skirts. The austerity was broken by the occasional white scarf or ruff that also hinted at period costume. Even though the effect was much starker than “Rattika”, the choreography was very dynamic, with lots of diagonals formed not only by the dancers but by the black chairs continually being moved about - the only props besides two white panels. What a treat of a night!
It was marvellous! It is what choreography should be. With nine dancers, a space to move in, a few lights, there was no need even for music - a sound, a whisper, some chanting, a shout, a song that never really had a tune. There was the occasional tongue-in-cheek, "wink-of-an-eye" movement to break the tension. It was jerky-liquid; static-dynamic; chaos-order. It was superb! It took a while to get into the lack of music, especially at the beginning, and the noise made by the latecomers was particularly audible and irritating. But suddenly in the "red" number (caused by the lighting) I "caught on" to what it was all about. It was masterly. Naharin is one of my favourite choreographers and even though this is a difficult dance to engage with, he is still number 1 on my list.
I have never felt like going to see Victor Ullate’s Ballet but I met one of his dancer’s and went to see her in his latest piece.
Wonderland pays homage to Ullate’s sister who is a patient in a mental asylum, and the theme is dealt with tenderness and deep understanding.
Ullate has a cast of excellent and dedicated dancers. Lovely costumes and a very good beginning: dramatic lighting, a white floor, white chairs and background images in black and white with scenes that give a feeling of loneliness and sadness. Some really good choreography, especially the group numbers, all danced to a score by Philip Glass with his music that is so repetitive but so beautiful.
But…it’s all just a bit too long, with too many duets. I started trying to work out how many there would be if the 24 dancers all got a turn to dance with each other (276 duets!!) and the two dancers in black ( did they symbolise Madness?) who started taking away the patients one by one. There were a few trios but why not have quartets, quintets, sextets? Given the number of cast members, there are endless combinations! And surely asylums have gardens! Why not have a change of scenery?- so many chairs, too often in “V” formation got a bit tedious.
Wonderland is not wonderful but I have overcome my unjustified prejudices and just might go watch another production of theirs.
