I didn´t have to do any threatening (see Entry sat.26 Sep. Festival de Otoño Offers ) just pay the petrol. My interest in going to Circus Klezmer was because of the music, and there was, live music- 2 violins, an accordeon, percussion and of course a clarinet. There was also a "badly" played trumpet but that formed part of the story.
Klezmer music surged from small Jewish villages in eastern Europe. Its music for weddings and celebrations, happy but melancholical at the same time. And as the saying goes- a Jewish wedding without klezmer music is like a funeral with no tears.
Circus Klezmer falls into the category of contemporary or new circus where the numbers (trapeze, juggling etc.) are accompanied by a story. And there is a simple story with universal characters, the arrival of the bride to a small village. She does "cloths (the imagery inspired by Chagall´s aerial brides) and trapeze. The bridegroom juggles, the aunt, acrobatics, is married to the "dreamer" who does the acrobatics and juggles and he drives her crazy. Of course there is the village fool, played by the director and he also directs the action from the stage.
The stage was a riot of colour and objects: boxes, boxes of fruit and vegetables, old furniture, suitcases, straw. All that was missing were a few live chickens. Of course it ended with a wedding. They got stage technicians to hold the poles of the canopy (chuppah) and as in all Jewish ceremonies men have to cover their heads .Three of the technician got dirty old cloths put on, while the fourth was given a big cabbage leaf.
It was sweet and tender with very rehearsed "slapstick" comedy, audience (and stage technician) participation . The music was beautiful!
