the short and the sweet: reflexiones sobre danza: Wonderland, Victor Ullate Ballet, Teatros del Canal

--> -->Nunca he ido a ver al Victor Ullate Ballet (prejuicios no justificados, lo confieso) pero conocí a una de sus bailarinas y fui a verla bailar.
Ullate dedica Wonderland a su hermana, que esta ingresada en un psiquiátrico, y el tema está tratado con comprensión y ternura.

Ullate tiene un elenco de bailarines muy buenos y comprometidos. El inicio es dramático: el blanco del suelo y de las sillas, la iluminación muy acertada. Las imágenes en blanco y negro del fondo rezuman soledad y tristeza, y su vestuario, elegido con gusto, también ayuda. Muy buenas algunas de las coreografías, sobre todo las de grupo.

Durante todo el espectáculo, la música es de Philip Glass: tan repetitiva pero tan bonita.

Pero... se hizo largo, demasiados dúos. Me dio por calcular cuántos faltaba por ver, si los 24 bailarines habían de formar todas las parejas posibles (sí, ¡276!). Y luego estaban los dos bailarines de esmoquin negro (¿simbolizaban a la locura?), que iban retirando a los internos uno por uno. Había algún trío, pero por qué no cuartetos, quintetos... tanto bailarín da para mucho juego. Y todo eso en el mismo decorado: ¿por qué no un cambio?; ¿no tienen jardines los psiquiátricos? Tanta silla, a menudo con formación en "V", me resultó repetitiva y lenta.

Wonderland no es una maravilla, pero sí he cambiado mi opinión sobre Ullate. Puede que vaya a ver su próxima producción.

I have never felt like going to see Victor Ullate’s Ballet but I met one of his dancer’s and went to see her in his latest piece.

Wonderland pays homage to Ullate’s sister who is a patient in a mental asylum, and the theme is dealt with tenderness and deep understanding.

Ullate has a cast of excellent and dedicated dancers. Lovely costumes and a very good beginning: dramatic lighting, a white floor, white chairs and background images in black and white with scenes that give a feeling of loneliness and sadness. Some really good choreography, especially the group numbers, all danced to a score by Philip Glass with his music that is so repetitive but so beautiful.

But…it’s all just a bit too long, with too many duets. I started trying to work out how many there would be if the 24 dancers all got a turn to dance with each other (276 duets!!) and the two dancers in black ( did they symbolise Madness?) who started taking away the patients one by one. There were a few trios but why not have quartets, quintets, sextets? Given the number of cast members, there are endless combinations! And surely asylums have gardens! Why not have a change of scenery?- so many chairs, too often in “V” formation got a bit tedious.

Wonderland is not wonderful but I have overcome my unjustified prejudices and just might go watch another production of theirs.
